Research&Planning:Finished creatativity task.

This is our finished music video to Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2 by Pink Floyd. I think it's quite good seeing as we only had two weeks to make it and therefore couldn't spend a lot of time on planning, filming or editing. We decided to include lots of different things in our video and have many different scenes rather than a story as we felt this went better with the songs theme of rebellion in school. We showed lyrics drawn on a whiteboard as this contrasted with the words 'we don't need no education' and the fact that it was written on a school whiteboard, used to educate. We also showed 'we don't need no thought control.' on a newspaper being read by a student in a teachers office as we felt this incorporated a lot of different messages into one shot. First rebellion as the student is sitting in a teachers office which wouldn't normally be allowed and also a political message of how the newspapers propaganda could be seen as 'thought control.' We also had some scenes that were quite iconic for schools, such as the long school corridor, the stage and the steps.

We used a few different editing techniques in the video such as double time with the student writing on the blackboard in the beginning and cutting to the beat, which can be seen at around 0:53 where it flashes black on the word 'wall' and after this when the pictures flash up in time to the beat. We also used a cross over effect at 0:48 where there is a shot of a pupil throwing paper at the camera with another shot layered over school books and paper.

I think that this exercise helped a lot as it improved my ability to think fast about what different shots to take and what looked good on screen. It also helped with my understanding of using Final Cut Pro as we tested out a lot of effects that we hadn't previously looked at before.

The finished video.

Research&Planning:Two week creativity challenge.

To prepare us for when we make our actual music video in September for the next two weeks we have been given the task of filming and editing an entire music video, filmed using our phones, in and around the school.

The song we were given was Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2, which is notorious for being about rebelling at school and therefore suits the location given to us.

The very first thing that we did was listen to the song, as some members of the group had not heard it, without watching the official music video to give us some initial ideas, and then watch the video and saw what the band had done with it.

The official music video:
Then we did some research on Pink Floyd and the song, using the information provided on the Internet to help us when thinking up ideas for our video.

The second thing we did was think about what other music videos we knew were set in schools and to watch a few of them and see how the school is represented and how its been filmed.

Using this inspiration we then started to make some brainstorms, based on the four media aspects:

Mise-en-scene:

Editing:

Camera:

Sound:

After this we started to think about certain locations around the school where we could film, and then went to photograph these to see how they would look and fit together.

Then, putting this all together we came up with a few initial ideas that we could use in our music video and our next step will be to discuss them in depth more, chose an idea and create a storyboard.

Research&Planning: Defining Creativity

During our lesson we took some time to discover what creativity meant to us and what it meant to other people. This was important as later in the course it is required that we express creativity through our music videos and we answer an exam question incorporating these ideas.
The term creativity is often used to describe pieces of work, especially in Media Studies but it is actually quite hard to define, as a class we came up with a few key ideas of what creativity could mean to us.
  • Thinking 'outside the box',
  • Expressing yourself,
  • Imagination,
  • Having no boundaries,
  • Being inspired,
  • A process,
  • Inventing/reinventing,
  • Something made for an audience,
We then had to make our own definition of creativity and mine was:

Creativity is a process of creating something using imagination, it is expressing yourself and feelings  through different mediums.

It is defined by the Oxford dictionary as:

Creativity

Pronunciation: /ˌkriːeɪˈtɪvɪti/

noun

[mass noun]
  • the use of imagination or original ideas to create something; inventiveness: firms are keen to encourage creativity
